Guidelines for applicants for The Peter Safar Research Fellowship
1. Applicants should first submit an electronic letter of intent with CV to the Laerdal Foundation stating that they are interested in a fellowship position at either SRRC or WISER .
2. If the applicant meets eligibility criteria (level of training, country of origin,) the Laerdal Foundation will forward the letter of intent to the director of either WISER or SRRC and refer the applicant to contact that individual by phone or email to discuss potential project opportunities at the respective sites. At that point, it would be determined whether or not the applicant’s background and interests were compatible with the ongoing projects at the site of interest. Mutual interest in proceeding with the application by both the applicant and the faculty mentor is necessary.
3. The screened prospective applicant(s) that were approved would then formally apply to the Laerdal Foundation for the award. The application should include CV, letters of support (3-4) and a one page (maximum) letter addressing three points—1) A brief description of the candidate’s background, 2) A brief description of the project that the candidate would address, 3) A description of the long-term goals of the candidate including details as to how this fellowship and project would facilitate achieving those goals.
4. Once submitted, the applications will be initially reviewed in Pittsburgh, where a meeting would be held 1-2 wks before the meeting of the Laerdal Foundation Board. At the meeting in Pittsburgh, Drs. Ake Grenvik, Paul Phrampus, Samuel Tisherman, and Patrick Kochanek would serve as a committee to provide a rank order of applicants and a brief comment about each applicant
5. The Laerdal Board will then meet, carry out their own review of the application materials which would also include the ranking and comments from Pittsburgh. The Laerdal Foundation Board would then select the final applicant and inform both the applicant and the committee in Pittsburgh
