How to Apply

The Laerdal Foundation supports research with practical value and the potential to help save lives.

Before applying, please review the Foundation’s priority areas, eligibility requirements, and funding categories.

Before you apply

Applications must include a clear research component.
Applications must be relevant to one or more of the Foundation’s priority areas.
Previously successful applicants must wait at least one year after receiving funding from the Foundation before submitting a new application.

What we support

We welcome research that:

addresses important knowledge gaps.
generates new evidence.
has the potential to improve survival, health outcomes or quality of care.
can inform clinical practice, education, implementation, guidelines or policy.
has relevance beyond the immediate project setting.
includes appropriate research capacity and partnerships.

Applications may be strengthened by factors such as strong research and implementation partnerships, multicentre collaboration, complementary funding from other sources, and a credible pathway to wider adoption or future scale-up through other actors.

Funding categories

Program support – For 3–5-year research programs.
Project support – For 12-18 month research projects.
Saving lives in low-resource settings - For research projects based in low-resource areas.
Bjørn Lind stipend – For simulation-based research in collaboration with SAFER

What we do not support

Activities without a clear research component.
General health or education initiatives.
Requests solely for acquisition of equipment.
Construction of hospitals, health centres, or other infrastructure.
Commercial product development.
Conference, travel or event support as the primary purpose of the application.
Vaccination and certain microbiological areas.
Projects without sufficient local involvement and ownership where this is relevant.

Additional considerations for research in low-resource settings

For maternal and newborn health research submitted under the Saving Lives in Low-Resource Settings category, the Foundation does not prioritize:

Projects outside perinatal and newborn period.
Lifestyle or general maternal diseases during pregnancy.
General family planning programs.
